As a matter of fact, no two record needles are exactly alike even if they are of the same make and model. It does not mean record is perfect. Mint records can have flaws such as warps, non-fills & scratches. No way to know that unless item is open. Because the price of mint items is based on being sealed, they must be returned in their sealed condition. WARNING Once opened sealed item cannot be returned even if there is a flaw in the record. Occasionally an open record will be graded as Mint in which it will be designated as so and accompanied by explanation Near Mint(NM)/Minty: this grade is for records that are lightly used and still retain a good deal of the qualities of new vinyl. Only the faintest sign of use can barely be seen. NM does not mean Mint or perfect. Some sealed records come out NM because of poor handling at the pressing plant. NM will play with few lite traces of static or pops EX/VG++: just a bit more wear than NM. Vinyl in this condition may deceptively look like a NM copy before close inspection. It has the type lite flaws that you may find in NM vinyl, only slightly more of it. surface marks are fewer and very light. Normal record playback with all the normal flaws of record playing, that means minimal trace of static or pops. VG+: this is the quintessential average used vinyl. Not too great and not too bad. Fairly worn and used. Physical flaws are moderate and can be detected without too much straining. May have mild surface marks that cause soft static and pops, but not too excessive levels . VG: below average. May have lite scratches that can cause lite skips of a few short short duration. A good deal of the original luster may be gone. Surface will show a great deal of marks but not to the point of excessively congested. Only buy records in this condition if you really like the music and are happy with the price. If you are really picky & fussy records in this grade are not for you. Might have competing static and pops at a moderate level G+: this is as low as I am willing to go. Way below average vinyl. Will only list items that are rare or very popular in this category. Often the collectibility quotient is greater than the sonic value. G+ vinyl has heavy signs of wear and use. Scratches, scuffs and skips can be extreme. Static & pops are pronounced ALL GRADING IS VISUAL, A MIXTURE OF SUBJECTIVE & OBJECTIVE EVALUATION THAT ARE AFFECTED BY EQUIPMENT. I LIVE IN A VERY DRY PART OF THE COUNTRY AND USE MC CARTRIDGE, BOTH OF WHICH CAN INTRODUCE MORE STATIC IN MY EVALUATION THAN IS REALLY THERE ON THE RECORD. DUE TO THESE REASONS I DO NOT GRADE SOUND. NO MATTER HOW ACCURATE MY DESCRIPTIONS OF SOUND THERE’S ALWAYS A HUGE POSSIBILITY YOU WILL HEAR THE RECORD DIFFERENTLY ON YOUR EQUIPMENT WHICH IS NOT IDENTICAL TO MINE.
