Very rare Enid Collins wooden retro handbag purse for the serious collector: ~ Highly unusual form with split or double sliding top closure ~ There is a built in stop that allows each side to open most of the way (save for about 1 3/4″ on each end) ~ Early wooden box bag design with double leather strap handles ~ Titled « Paisano » and features a road runner type bird with full mid-century flair including star bursts and plastic jewels ~ A real conversation piece bound to quickly become the crown jewel of your collection Ready and waiting for your collection, display, special outfit or event, and/or gift giving – you will love this! AGE OR ERA: Original true authentic vintage piece – estimating late 1950’s to early 1960’s MARKINGS: Painted gold purse design name Paisano and makers signature or mark of lower case ec with copyright c in circle mark METAL / MATERIAL: Wood body, wooden sliding top panels, leather handles, painted designs, plastic jewels, and brass or brass toned metal hardware / tacks ANECDOTAL, METAPHYSICAL, &/or LORE: The road runner bird is a classic symbol of the American Southwest and Southwestern culture. Native Americans believe road runners to be medicine birds that can protect against evil spirits. Their unusual X-shaped footprints are used as sacred symbols to ward off evil. According to Shamanism, the roadrunner’s wisdom lies in the bird’s agility, proper use of speed and understanding of rapid change. To those who possess the roadrunner image – is thought to bring speed of thought and the ability to grasp new opportunities…… Emulate the road runner and think quickly and grasp the opportunity to own this special box purse CLASP / CLOSURE: Sliding panels MEASUREMENTS: Front and back panels are aprox 11″ wide x 5 3/4″ tall (not including the height of 1/4″ the little feet on the bottom give). The purse is about 4 7/16″ deep. The height of the side panels are slightly shorter than the front and the back at aprox 5 3/8″. The front and back pieces are a bit taller to conceal the channels the top sliding panels. Strap drop is roughly 5″. WEIGHT: x TESTING: x U.S. RING SIZE: x INVENTORY NUMBER OR NOTE: x CONDITION = Perfectly imperfect vintage pre-loved, pre-owned condition. Well worthy of adoration or restoration by the right person. There are several issues, most have potential for improvement, if you felt the need. The leather straps are worn and one has a break that is held together by staples, there are dings and dents in just about every metal stud (one in back is almost all the way depressed), and one jewel is missing. There is wear, tiny chips, minor mars, blemishes and flaws on every side – please study the photos. There is a slight musty smell and some greening on the inside only – most likely from being closed up a very long time. Zero smells from the outside – so I have high hopes it can be cleaned, treated, and/or aired out. I have not cleaned this in any way. With that being said – it is complete, the sliding panels work well, and the painted designs are nicely intact. This is a very fine piece anyone would be proud to own – from a novice just starting out to a well-seasoned collector. In an excellent state of preservation.
