MIJ Fender Japan ST-50VM OTM Electric Guitar This « Limited Series » Stratocaster was released as a variation model in 1992, and although it has some fine details, it is still a rare model. Product description The « Limited Series » Stratocaster was introduced as a variation model in the official catalogue in 1992. As its name suggests, it was only produced for a short period of about one year, and the number produced was small, making it known as a « rare model. » Later, the « Crafted Series » released a guitar with an almost identical model number called the « ST-50, » but the release date and specifications were completely different. This instrument has a vintage-style Stratocaster body and a neck with specifications that prioritize playability, and it is somehow influenced by the USA-made « American Standard ». The serial number indicates that it was made in 1990-91. Although « ST-500V » is stamped on the joint between the body and neck, the model number at the time of sale is « ST-50V », which can be a little confusing (lol). With an alder body, 1P maple neck, and 1P white pickguard, at first glance it looks like a ’57 type, but as mentioned above, the neck is significantly different, with 22 frets, Rotomatic pegs, medium jumbo frets, and a head-adjustable truss rod, all of which were considered new innovations at the time. Additionally, the catalog from that time describes it as « a limited edition ST-50V Stratocaster with a rare color scheme known as a custom color, » so the now-standard Ocean Turquoise Metallic (OTM) color may have been rare at the time. By the way, the color tone is darker than the current OTM, so it is also attractive that the color looks different depending on the angle. The pickups are thought to be the original « ST-Vintage », but only the rear pickup appears to have been replaced (manufacturer unknown). It has a slightly higher output and the pole pieces are chamfered, but the sound remains the same, so I think it might be made by Fender, but I won’t say for sure… The sound balance when switching pickups is also good, so you can use it as is without any problems. There are also signs that the assembly has been modified, and although the basic wiring remains the same, the tone for the center also works for the rear. My overall impression is that it retains a vintage feel while also improving playability, making it an easy-to-use Stratocaster! The neck has peeling paint all over the fingerboard, a single dent on the back, and signs of having been reshaped overall, but it doesn’t feel strange when playing, and the neck is quite thin, so anyone other than those who don’t like thin necks should be able to play it comfortably. (By the way, the reshape was rough so we fixed it a bit.) On the body, there are marks near the end pin at the bottom that look like the pin has sunk in, and traces of paint that had chipped as a result being glued back together, but other than that there are only small dents and scratches. About 70% of the frets remain (they have been filed down), and the neck is currently straight, but the rod is stiff when tightening. Although there are some scratches and repairs, this is a rare guitar that was only produced for about a year. If you are interested, please consider this opportunity.
