An original circa 1910 or so cast iron « North Pole » mechanical bank. This bank was never assembled & was never painted. The two sides of the bank will require some minor removal of a small amount of metal around some of the edges on the two sides & will also require a little tumbling. The original castings of the two side pieces were partly but not entirely prepared for assembly when the pieces were at the J. & E. Stevens Toy Company in Cromwell, Connecticut. The same description can be applied to the original shaft supporting the flag & also to the original base plate. Also, for assembly drilling a hole inside on one side of the casting to accept the tip of the screw will be required. So, to get these original parts assembled & into a working bank the buyer will need to find or need to make or have made the interior working parts that are missing from the mechanism. Fortunately, as an assistance to make or have the interior parts made, copies of the patent drawings showing the components comprising the mechanism are easy to obtain. The original Stevens coin trap was found on another bank. The original & correct J. E. Stevens screw was found many years ago in a group of original Stevens parts. We found all of these original parts over a period of approximately 30 years in five different separate situations. The two half sections on one find, the flag on another find, the screw on another find, the base plate on another find, & the trap (as mentioned from another Stevens bank). The reason we mention this, in addition to giving a full background, is that the patina does vary from piece to piece. This is because all of these original pieces did not live together during their previous years before we brought them all together. An example of the « North Pole Bank » is listed & pictured on page 246 in the 2007 edition of the Price Guide to Mechanical Banks by Morphy. In that 16 year old book the bank is listed for prices ranging from $10,000. to $90,000. depending on condition. Here are some actual prices paid for original examples of the bank: one original example, but with replaced interior mechanism parts, sold in a Bertoia auction in April of 2006 at $39,600., another all original & superb example sold in an October of 2007 Morphy auction for $149,500., another example in superb original condition sold in an October 2008 Bertoia auction for $105,750., another example (part brass & part iron) in an October 2009 RSL auction sold at $42,525., another example assembled (outside of the factory) from J.E. Stevens parts sold in a May 2010 RSL auction for $13,365. Those are some examples of original cast iron examples of the « North Pole Bank » which have changed hands at auctions since 2006. The « North Pole Bank » was designed by Charles A. Bailey, the great master of mechanical bank design, who was from Cobalt, Connecticut. The design was covered under patent number D-965,843 which was assigned on July 26, 1910. The bank was manufactured by the J. & E. Stevens Co. of Cromwell, Connecticut. The example that we are offering has a base plate which was made slightly before the patent date was assigned as our base plate has the marking « Pat Apld For ». It is hard to measure the exact size that the bank would be assembled as this example needs assembly. But, the longest measurement from right to left of the base is approximately 4 inches. The longest approximate measurement of the base of the bank from front to back is 3 1/16 inches. The approximate height of the bank is 5 5/16 inches inches with the flag down. The total weight of the bank components present is 1 pound 12.4 ounces. The base plate has light overall surface rust. The flag on shaft & the two sides have age toning & some minor areas of light surface rust. The turn trap has a rich dark patina. A major rarity in mechanical bank collecting. An excellent chance for an advanced collector or dealer to acquire one of the real challenges in the circle of mechanical bank collecting.
